New Florida AC Warranty Law HB 481

On May 28, 2024, Governor DeSantis signed HB 481 into law. Effective July 1, 2024, it is an important law related to the automatic transfer of any AC warranty when a property is sold, it includes the following provisions:

  • Automatic Warranty Transfer: HVAC system warranties automatically transfer to new owners when residential property changes hands.

  • No Registration Requirement: HVAC warranties cannot be conditioned upon product registration.
  • Installation Date Coverage: Warranties are effective from the installation date if installed by a licensed contractor.
  • Registration Card Information: If provided, the registration card must state:
    • It is for product registration.
    • Non-completion does not affect warranty rights or duration.
    • Warranty conditions cannot require product registration.

Manufacturers, distributors, or retailers cannot require product registration for an HVAC system warranty. If a contractor insists you must register to get the warranty, they’re not being truthful. This is not good practice, so seek a second quote from another contractor.
